There are times when working in Civil Site Design there is a need to rename a drawing file.
Civil Site Design creates a data folder separate to the drawing and uses it to undertake operations (add pipe, edit pipe, store elevations, build surface, etc). This is managed differently based on whether you have 'packed' the data (ticked on to 'Use Project Storage') or not.
IF USING DATA FOLDER (NOT USING PACK MODE)
When changing the name of a drawing that has Civil Site Design data it is necessary to also change the name of the related data folder.
The data folder is usually located in the same folder as the DWG file.
The naming convention of this data file is the name of the drawing with -DATA appended.
i.e. a drawing file named PROJECT.DWG would have a folder named PROJECT-DATA
If you are unable to find the DATA folder, please use the OPEN DATA FOLDER tool to locate this folder (click on Data Folder when using this tool - click backspace twice to highlight the folder in the displayed window and this is your data folder).
Close your CAD system.
Rename the drawing and the data folder to ensure the drawing name and data folder prefix are the same
PROJECT.DWG and PROJECT_DATA would be renamed STAGE1.DWG and STAGE1-DATA
Packed Data Status (Project Storage is ON)
In this mode, the software places the Civil Site Design data into a location on your computer (usually your local Temp folder, to which you should always have access) in a data folder
Whenever you Save the drawing the software will (essentially) zip up the Data folder contents and embed them inside the single drawing file
when you open the drawing file (regardless of location or name) and run a Civil Site Design command it will unzip the data to your local temp folder and leverage that data folder for your current session. Again when you save the drawing it will pack the data folder inside the drawing
Doing a Save As will result in the software packing the data inside the drawing and saving it with a new name
